Mr Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons and Senior Advisor to IDG Ventures India, has invested anundisclosed amount in his personal capacity into NestAway Technologies Pvt Ltd, a leader in the ‘managed’ home rentals market in India.NestAway is India’s first “home rental network”.
It seeks to manage all the rental pains on both homeowner and tenant sides. NestAway essentially turns unbranded, unfurnished houses into fully furnished & managed apartments and provides them at affordable prices to verified tenants. So far, the startup has provided quality rental homes to about 5,000 tenants across 6 cities. What Flipkart’s devaluation means for Indian startups

Marked an inflection point for the Indian startup ecosystem. Emboldened by an ever-increasing smartphone penetration and online shopping reaching millions of customers, this was when India’s most celebrated e-commerce company, Flipkart, raised an eye-popping $1 billion in capital, drawing a never-seen-before valuation of $7 billion for any Indian tech startup.
Flipkart was in one shot catapulted to the top tier of privately held internet ventures globally, comprising superstars like taxi-hailing smartphone app Uber, Airbnb, Dropbox and Pinterest. From then till now, the Bangalore-based e-tailer has had a cascading effect on the overall funding boom in India as a flag-bearer of the country’s startup revolution. So when tech news portal The Information broke the news on Friday that Flipkart has lost 27% of its present $15-billion valuation, according to filings made by a mutual fund managed by one of its investors, Morgan Stanley, the clear and present danger of sharp corrections impacting other high-flying startups hit home harshly. Flipkart did not offer any comments to TOI on Morgan Stanley slashing its valuation.
“This is very significant as it’s the first such public readjustment among the Indian unicorns (privately held startups valued at $1 billion or more). Companies with lofty valuation tags which have no revenue model, forget positive unit economics, would see corrections in the range of 50% or more going forward,” says an investor in many of the big-ticket consumer internet companies who did not want to be named.
Having already scooped up $3.1 billion from myriad investors, Flipkart is currently looking to raise fresh funds to the tune of $1 billion but will find it tough to do so at the $15-billion valuation mark. A dogged rival in Amazon, a new CEO in Binny Bansal (Sachin Bansal stepped down from the post in January), a continuous top-level exodus in the past year, and its inability to expand successfully beyond the commerce business, are now being factored in while determining the value of the company founded in 2007 by the two Bansals who are unrelated.

Freedom 251 biggest scam of the millennium: Congress MP

Alleging that the Freedom 251 smartphone scheme was a “fraud,” Congress MP Pramod Tiwari in Rajya Sabha has strongly objected to the presence of BJP leaders at the launch of the scheme to sell smartphones at a price of Rs 251 and sought a reply from the government.
“I am making a definite allegation. This government is going to do a big scam. This is going to be the biggest scam of the millennium during the rule of BJP.
He said 6 crore bookings have already been made for the phone and even at the rate of Rs 251 each, the mobile company must have collected hundreds of crores of rupees.
Demanding that the money collected by the company should be kept secure, Tiwari said even the director of the company has said that the minimum cost of the phone is Rs 1400 and wondered how can the gadget be then sold at just Rs 251.
Tiwari said if it is possible to get a phone at Rs 251, then how can others are charging Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 for a mobile handset.
“Either this is wrong or that is wrong. The government has its share either in this or that. Government should answer,” Tiwari said.
Ringing Bells, a Noida-based startup, which launched the mobile, had said it developed the smartphone with support from the government.
Soon after the launch ceremony, where a veteran BJP leader was present, doubts were raised about the genuineness of the company’s claim to provide phone at the rate of Rs 251.

A mid a very public battle with the FBI over demands that it open a phone belonging to one of the San Bernadino attackers, a report has said that Apple is already developing new security measures that would make it impossible for the government to break into a locked iPhone.
The report in the New York Times said that engineers were already attempting to update the security of its phones and that it they are successful the company would create a significant technical challenge for law enforcement agencies, even if the Obama administration wins its fight over access to data stored on an iPhone. The FBI would then have to find another way to defeat Apple security, setting up a new cycle of court fights and, yet again, more technical fixes by Apple.
“We are in for an arms race unless and until Congress decides to clarify who has what obligations in situations like this,” Benjamin Wittes, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, told the newspaper.
Companies have always searched for software bugs and patched holes to keep their code secure from hackers. But since the revelations of government surveillance made by Edward Snowden, companies have been retooling their products to protect against intrusion, the newspaper said.
The revelation that Apple’s efforts would make it impossible for the government to break into a locked iPhone using methods similar to those now at the centre of a court fight in California, come as the two sides have engaged in a public relations battle over the issue.
The FBI is seeking the tech company’s help to access shooter Syed Rizwan Farook’s phone by disabling some of its passcode protections. The company so far has pushed back, arguing that such a move would set a dangerous precedent and threaten customer security.
Reuters said the clash between Apple and the Justice Department had driven straight to the heart of a long-running debate over how much law enforcement and intelligence officials should be able to monitor digital communications.
The Justice Department won an recent order in a California federal court. The director of the FBI also weighed in with a public appeal, saying the nation owed the victims “a thorough and professional investigation under law.”
“We simply want the chance, with a search warrant, to try to guess the terrorist’s passcode without the phone essentially self-destructing and without it taking a decade to guess correctly,” wrote FBI Director James Comey.
“That’s it. We don’t want to break anyone’s encryption or set a master key loose on the land.”
Apple said the request would set a dangerous legal precedent and expand government surveillance powers..
“Law enforcement agents around the country have already said they have hundreds of iPhones they want Apple to unlock if the FBI wins this case,” it said in a statement.
“In the physical world, it would be the equivalent of a master key, capable of opening hundreds of millions of locks.”
While Apple has secured the support of some high profile figures, including Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook, a poll by the Pew Research Centre suggested only 38 per cent of Americans supported the tech company’s stance. Bill Gates of Microsoft said the issue was not “straightforward”.

Apple plans for changing its pricing strategy in India

The company, awaiting clearance for its investment proposal to open Apple Stores in India, decided to clamp down on online discounting to bring pricing parity across offline and online trade, two senior industry executives with knowledge of the matter said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
“As Apple expects its FDI (foreign direct investment) application will receive approval shortly, it wants to bring back pricing hygiene across online and offline so that it can draw customers to its own stores and make them a viable revenue generator,” one of the executives said.
Apple didn’t respond to an e-mail seeking comment until press time on Tuesday.
Chief executive Tim Cook talked about opening company-owned stores and the exciting opportunities India offers during a recent town hall meeting and in an interview to Fortune magazine. The company, which didn’t see India as a major market until a few years ago, is now placing long-term bets on the country.
On a call with analysts last month, Cook cited a young population, an expanding and increasingly affluent middle class with a thirst for best consumer products, robust economic growth and the government’s support and push towards economic reforms as the factors supporting the outlook.
Though on a small base, Apple’s revenue has been growing at a quick pace in India for the past few quarters. In the October-December period, its India revenue rose 38%, compared with 11% in overall emerging markets and 14% in Greater China. It sold 8 lakh iPhones in India in that quarter, which was an all-time high. Apple plans to offer value-added services through its company-owned online store to differentiate with other online sellers and ecommerce marketplaces in India, the executive said.
The company will enable purchasing from the Apple Store app in India, he said.
The Apple online store will offer customization of hardware for Mac computers, company-certified refurbished products for which it has already sought approval from the Centre, and laser-engraving for customer’s personal message on the products.
“As in any market where Apple has its company-owned stores, it would drive much of the revenue and customer traffic from them in India too,” the executive said. The huge discounting of Apple iPhones online has already moderated in the past one month after the Indian operation got under greater control from the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, California, the executive said. For instance, the discounts that used to be up to Rs 6,000-7,000 for iPhones has come down to Rs 1,000-3,000.
The second executive said Apple’s own offline and online stores will operate as part of an omnichannel, which including other things will allow consumers to purchase online and then pick up the product from an offline store. Apple has started preliminary internal research to identify locations of company-owned stores, the executive said.
Apple has started controlling its sales network through a new website, indiaishop.in, floated by its four distributors – Ingram Micro, Redington, Beetel-Brightstar and Rashi Peripherals, both executives said. Apple owns the copyright of the website and will list all the authorised sellers of Apple products in India on it to ensure price control.

It has also combined with Airtel for offering a 4G data offer to its customers where one can utilise up to 30GB data for six months. With respect to value, smartphone sales in India last year has grown 20 per cent. This year it is expected to grow by 16-18 per cent.  Mr Sharma pointed out that people today are changing phones every 16 to 18 months, this has gone down from 22 to 24 months two years back. There are also people who change phones every five to six months.As per industry experts, India is among the fastest growing smartphone markets in the world. In 2015, almost 550 million feature phones were sold in India. On a national level, the company’s total market share is 45.9 per cent. The company also has a share of almost 43 per cent in the mobile phone industry including feature phones.
